One down, one more to go!!

It is friday afternoon and I finished my pharm midterm #2 earlier today and I have spent the rest of the day relaxing and trying to get my brain back to somewhat full capacity. The test was ok, definitely harder than the first one, but the grades have been posted and it went much better than I thought. So all I have to do now is get motivated for the next one, pathophys on Monday, which as of right now is much harder than I had hoped. Hopefully, that'll happen soon.

Very big "news" week!!

First of all and most importantly, Nat matched at Maimomides Hospital is Brooklyn, NY!!! We are finally going to be together for longer than just a week in the same country (as I will be in Brooklyn as well doing my rotations). This past week has been nothing but a ball of nerves for both Nat and I , wishing and hoping that he'd get his first choice hospital. I wanted to say Congrats to all of Nat's friends that got jobs also and are graduating with him this June! YEAH!!!

Secondly, in the beginning of this week, an announcement was made in our class that a parent of a SGU student in Grenada was on a boat and was missing. The St. Vincent campus was chartering a plane to help in the search and rescue attempts. Luckily, the parent was found, still on the boat, about 50 miles off the coast of Grenada, nearing Margarita Island, Venezuela. It was kinda strange however, that students in Grenada were never informed about this incident but they told us and even flew some fellow students out there, hmmm... Well, luckily the parent was saved and all is well now.

Thirdly, I will be coming back to the states in less than 2 months!! I am sooo excited. Now all I have to do is get through these upcoming tests, BSCE II, OSCE and finals and I'm all in the clear to finally come back home!!!

Well, this weekend is going to bring me nothing but many hours of studying and a sore ass from sitting all day!! hehehe. Wish me luck that I get all of this information into my head.

Quick Update: I will not be staying at a family friend's house this summer while studying for boards. I will, instead, be staying right off of Jamboree Rd. in beautiful Irvine, CA in corporate apartments. Hopefully, once my Step 1 is over I can actually enjoy living down there!!

Nothing really new to report!

So I know I promised a more fun post but I am reluctant to say that that is not true this time. As a disclaimer, as I stated before, it is very close to exams for me so I really do not leave the house or my little study area. However, I did go out on Friday night to support SGA's pseudo-St. Patty's day party at MarcoMay. It was fun, not too many people but a lot of karoke. And for those that really know me, know that I love karoke even though I cannot carry a tune if it could save my life. But not to disappoint, mainly myself, I did perform a nice little rendition of Hotel California in support of all the Californians at the party/SGU. Other than that it has been a quick and quiet weekend filled with lots of studying.
Talked to my parents today and they have helped me out immensely by helping me find housing this summer while I am taking my Step 1 class in Irvine, CA. It looks like I will be living about 10 mins away from UCI at a family friend's house, housesitting for them while they are in China for 3 weeks. I will update everyone where exactly I will be!!
Other news, it is my mom's birthday this upcoming Friday, yes, that's St. Patty's day. I spent a good part of today finalizing her present but because she reads this blog, I cannot say what I ended up getting for her! hehehehe!!
Lastly and very importantly, Nat finds out about his residency placement this Wednesday. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers that everything works out for him/us and he is happy with the decision the Match makes. I am keeping my fingers crossed that he ends up in Brooklyn so we can finally start living our lives together instead of being 5000 miles away from eachother. Please keep your fingers crossed that it all works out!!

Sorry about the boring posts!

So I just reread my most recent posts and I have come to the conclusion that they are kinda boring and/or serious. So I promise in my upcoming posts, they will be more fun and some more pictures. But in my defense, exams are coming up so I don;t really get out much, pretty much just for class and the hospital; but I will try my best. Hope ervyone is having a great week!

Update on a fun, busy hospital day.

As I posted before last week was a very busy hospital where my group and I were just trying to play catch up with our hospital visits. Well, Friday was by far the busiest and collect days we have had at the hospital. It all started with us getting to the hospital at 745 am to sit in on an urology surgery (the little boy I had mentioned in the previous post). Well we get there and there are 3 other groups also there for the same surgery. So we pile into the OR and try to see everything that was going on. Luckily, the doc was using a camera probe so we could see everything on a tv screen. It was very cool!! The surgery only lasted about 45 mins and the baby seemed to be doing much better. After that, we all thought we were done for the day until the doc told us that in the next OR the ob/gyn is going to be performing a c-section; I immediately jumped at the chance to watch because I am becoming very interested in ob/gyn. I quickly raised my hand, because only 5 people were allowed to go in, and I luck out and became one of those 5. Let me tell you it was the coolest thing. The actual birth of the baby was very quick because there is a time limit for how long the baby can go without O2. So I am proud to say that I got to see the birth of a full-term, breached baby girl! It was insane! After the c-section, we snuck back in with our first doc, the urologist, and watched him perform a TURP would explain it but for the weak stomached, I'd rather not (just think, male anatomy, lost of tubes, probes and lubrication). It was a cool surgery but very long. After that surgery it was about noon and we were dying to eat before we went to our peds rotation. We quickly grabbed some KFC in town and then headed back to the hospital for peds. It was a great rotation, kinda bumming cases, 2 kids with malnutrition and acute gastritis. So I am now at a dilemma...which do I chose: peds or ob/gyn?? I know I have lots of time to decide but it is just so crazy that I have been so gungho about peds all this time and now I am just not sure. Anyways, that's my little hospital update for today. Other than that it's been a pretty boring weekend. Went to dinner with the girls Friday night to French Verandah again, the food is so good there. Other than that, just study study study!!

Hospital Week

This week has been all about hospital, hospital and more hospital. Because my group has been assigned to go to the hospital on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we are missing a lot of our assigned days because the school keeps cancelling Tuesday rotations. So to make up for our cancelled visits, my group and I have decided to make up some visits this week. We are going for a whopping 5 visits this week. Tuesday, we went to the male medical ward to interview a patient with rheumatic heart disease; it was interesting but kinda bumming. Wednesday, we decided to go with one of our professors, who is a licensed rheumatologist, pediatrician and a vetrinary doctor, to his clinic. What we thought would be a very easy and quick day ended up being our longest day ever on a clinical visit. We saw about 6 patients with everything from asthma to an acute appendicitis that needed to be sent to the ER ASAP. It was really cool except we ended up staying there for about 4 hours!! It was a very tiring day cause we were just standing and listening the entire time. Today, Thursday, we had surgery/urology and we saw a 2 month old little boy with a obstructed posterior urethral valve that caused him to have a a huge cyst filled with urine on his right side. The little boy was not passing any urine at all, instead his urine was just collecting in this cyst. So tomorrow the doctor is performing a surgery on the little boy to open up his obstructed valve. Our group is very lucky, cause the doctor asked us if we wanted to sit in on the procedure. So we are missing class tomorrow to go see this really cool surgery and then afterwards we are spending the afternoon in the pediatrics ward (my favorite). As you can see I was not joking when I said that we are doing mothing but hospital visits all this week. Hope everyone else is having a great week. It's almost the weekend!
